Nashville Brewery Shifts Strategy for Retail Expansion Halfway through 2026, TailGate Brewery is on track for 40% year-over-year growth in distribution across both chain and on-premise channels. The Tennessee-based independent brewery has restructured its core lineup and retail approach to capture market share amid broader industry cost-cutting pressures. "We made some counterintuitive pivots on our core lineup this year that are outpacing the same style predecessor in bars and restaurants," says Wesley Keegan, sole founder and owner of TailGate Brewery. "Combined with consistently growing major chain retail additions in recent spring sets, we're optimistically focused on growth."
Core Beers Drive Volume Gains TailGate's growth is anchored in two reformulated core offerings: Wizards' Order IPA (6% ABV) has doubled in volume year-over-year compared to its predecessor core IPA, while Lager Projekt (4.8% ABV), a German-style Munich helles lager, has also doubled in volume. The latter is distributed exclusively through program-approved retail accounts that agree to carry custom Lager glassware and TailGate-installed side-pull handles. TailGate Orange, the brewery's longstanding best-seller, will expand into West Tennessee Kroger stores this fall. A new variety pack called Apples and Oranges will debut in Sam's Club warehouses statewide in the third quarter.
On-Premise Dominates Distribution Mix The brewery's on-premise business now accounts for 70% of total distribution, with packaged beer off-premise sales up 25% in the second quarter compared to the first quarter of 2026. The shift reflects Keegan's philosophy on quality over margin protection. "The industry's loud about cost cutting and protecting margins in distribution. We made the opposite bet: listen to the beer drinker, distribute our best products," Keegan said. "Lager Projekt is proof: an 8-week lager in horizontal tanks with exclusively Weyermann malt. We did it anyway and it's doubled in volume this year earning trial and share. Patience on quality is growing this business."
Taproom Strategy Drives Retail Momentum Across its eight taproom locations in the Nashville area, TailGate is leveraging new product releases and limited-edition offerings to drive traffic and package sales. The SHNACK series—small-batch beers inspired by popular soda styles—has generated sellouts on release days. A new Mug Club Social Hour offers core beers at $1 for 20-ounce pours. The brewery has also expanded its sales infrastructure, adding an East Tennessee sales representative based in Knoxville to grow its footprint beyond Nashville. TailGate employs over 250 people in Tennessee and offers 100% paid health benefits to all team members. "Our team voted us a Best Place to Work two years in a row. That's the most important competition to me," Keegan said.
Why It Matters
TailGate's expansion strategy—focused on product quality, taproom experience, and selective retail partnerships—offers a contrarian playbook amid industry-wide margin pressures. The brewery's dual emphasis on on-premise foot traffic and off-premise velocity, combined with controlled distribution within Tennessee, demonstrates how regional brewers can drive sustainable growth without relying on aggressive price competition or national scale.
