The New SKU

Magic Cactus is stepping up its potency profile without abandoning its mainstream grocery positioning. The Scottsdale-based hemp THC beverage brand launched Higher Desert Edition, a limited single-serve 12-ounce can delivering 7mg of hemp-derived THC and 7mg of CBD in a 1:1 ratio — nearly double the milligram load of its microdosed core lineup but still below the 10mg single-serve that currently outsells all other formats in most retail hemp sets. The Mojave Berry-flavored SKU is priced at $19.99 per 4-pack and is available at Sprouts Farmers Market locations in Texas and Florida, as well as direct-to-consumer at magiccactus.com. The first production run sold out entirely on pre-order before the mid-September restock shipped.

The launch is notable less for the milligram count than for what it signals about the brand's route-to-market discipline. Magic Cactus is deliberately keeping Higher Desert Edition inside the grocery channel rather than routing it through smoke shops, specialty cannabis retailers, or convenience — channels where high-potency positioning dominates and brand equity is harder to build. That off-premise grocery focus is a calculated bet that mainstream food retailers, not traditional cannabis trade channels, represent the largest long-term volume opportunity in hemp beverages.

Grocery Velocity and Capital

Magic Cactus entered roughly 120 Sprouts Farmers Market stores across Texas and Florida in mid-January 2026, followed by a February expansion into The Fresh Market locations in North Carolina and Florida. Grocery now represents approximately 40% of total door count. The brand ranked first in Sprouts' hemp THC beverage set for the first half of 2026, per SPINS data, and all four core SKUs — Lavender Raspberry, Spiced Peach, Wild Black Cherry, and Watermelon Hibiscus — are on shelf alongside the new limited edition. Year-to-date wholesale revenue is up more than 200% versus the same period in 2025, though the company has not disclosed absolute revenue figures.

The commercial momentum has attracted follow-on capital. Listen Ventures, the Chicago-based consumer venture firm whose portfolio includes Calm, Factor, and Angel's Envy, led Magic Cactus's Seed round in early 2025 and made an additional investment in 2026. Tonic Ventures and other consumer-focused investors have also participated. Jeff Cantalupo, Founder and Managing Partner at Listen Ventures, cited the brand's earned badge value in the crowded hemp beverage set: "There is a sea of hemp THC beverages in the market but very few brands. Magic Cactus has built a cult following, a brand that people want to be seen drinking."

Regulatory Headwinds

The grocery expansion and new SKU arrive against a volatile regulatory backdrop for the entire hemp THC beverage category. Federal legislation passed in November 2025 would cap finished hemp products at 0.4mg THC per container — a threshold the industry broadly views as commercially unworkable and one that would effectively prohibit products like Higher Desert Edition. Congress subsequently delayed the effective date to December 11, 2026, creating a narrow window for a revised framework to emerge.

Magic Cactus's positioning is explicitly aligned with a regulated future. Founder and CEO Jonny Locarni has consistently framed the brand's low-dose, grocery-first strategy around a regulatory analogy: beer and wine versus spirits. "We built this brand for a world where we're regulated differently than traditional cannabis products," Locarni said. "We've always operated like we'd be regulated the way a beer is." That framing has practical implications for supply chain and distribution strategy: if a beer-like regulatory structure eventually prevails, brands already embedded in conventional grocery channels and three-tier-adjacent distribution networks will have a structural head start over competitors that built their volume in unregulated or specialty trade channels.

For wholesale buyers and distributors evaluating hemp THC beverage shelf sets, Magic Cactus's sell-through data at Sprouts — particularly the pre-order sellout for a limited SKU priced at $19.99 per 4-pack — offers a concrete velocity benchmark in a category still largely defined by anecdote. The brand's DTC subscriber base, which it calls The Cactus Club, also provides a direct demand signal that most hemp beverage brands lack, giving distributors and retail buyers more confidence in restocking decisions ahead of any regulatory resolution.
