Dancing Goat Distillery, based in Cambridge, Wisconsin, has launched Stillman's Sonder — two 10-year-aged whiskey expressions entering the premium spirits segment at a $70 suggested retail price for a 750ml bottle. The portfolio's initial SKUs are a Straight Bourbon Whiskey and an American Single Malt, with limited single-barrel selections available for both. Route-to-market is handled by Small Victories Imports, a boutique distributor focused on emerging beverage brands, alongside direct-to-consumer sales through the brand's website.
The Liquid & Its Provenance
Both expressions trace their origins to MGP's Indiana distillery, where exploratory production runs between 2010 and 2016 generated a cache of orphaned barrels. The Maas family — the founding team behind Dancing Goat — quietly acquired and curated those stocks over time, then undertook an 18-month blending and finishing program to bring the most viable casks to market.
The Straight Bourbon was matured in a combination of Andean and American oak, with double-oaked components added for texture and concentration. Barrels were spoon-proofed and subjected to encouraged oxidation via short fills and vatting before bottling at 94 proof (47% ABV). The expression earned a Double Gold Medal and 98 points at the 2026 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and received a nomination for Best in Class in the 6- to 10-year Small Batch Bourbon category — a meaningful commercial signal for wholesaler sell-in conversations.
The American Single Malt took a more complex finishing path: after initial maturation, it cycled through three rounds of blending, re-barreling, and cask finishing across virgin oak, ex-bourbon, Wisconsin brandy, Cognac, and Calvados barrels before bottling at 96.4 proof (48.2% ABV). The multi-cask finish positions it squarely within the fast-growing American single malt segment, which has gained TTB formal category recognition and increasing shelf real estate at premium off-premise accounts.
Distribution & Market Position
The go-to-market strategy currently relies on select U.S. retail placement combined with DTC online sales — a dual-channel approach common among limited-production premium spirits before broader wholesaler network expansion. Small Victories Imports' boutique positioning suggests early distribution will concentrate in on-premise accounts and independent specialty retailers rather than chain planogram resets, consistent with how aged, story-driven whiskeys typically build velocity.
At $70 per 750ml, Stillman's Sonder sits in a competitive but high-margin tier. Premium American whiskey — defined broadly as bottles above $50 — has been one of the more resilient price points in the broader spirits category as consumers trade down from ultra-premium but resist dropping below premium entirely. Competition from both established craft distillers and contract-produced aged-stock releases has intensified, making provenance storytelling and competition accolades increasingly important for initial depletions.
"Stillman's Sonder is both a tribute and a celebration of everything made possible by the spirit makers of America's Heartland," said Nick Brady Maas, Contemporary Stillman and Blender at Stillman's Sonder. "These two new whiskeys are an invitation to pause, connect, and reflect on the tapestry of our lives and the moments we share."
The brand's narrative is built around three generations of the Maas family. Duane Maas contributed to production advancement at Seagram's and Chartreuse beginning in the 1950s. His son Tom Maas helped guide small-batch bourbon's rise as a category. Nick Maas now operates at the blending table for Dancing Goat, whose existing portfolio spans Death's Door Gin, Limousin Rye, and Travis Hasse Pie Liqueurs — providing a diversified production platform and existing distributor relationships the new brand can leverage.
