Diageo's Zacapa Rum is rolling a limited-edition anniversary SKU into U.S. distribution this month, marking its first innovation outside the brand's core North American lineup with a liquid that pushes the boundaries of rum maturation. The Zacapa 50th Anniversary Edition — priced at $49.99 SRP — is now available in select markets across New York, California, Texas and Florida, targeting fine spirits retailers and premium on-premise accounts.
The Liquid & The Process
Developed by Lorena Vásquez, Zacapa's Master Blender of more than 40 years, the expression blends rums aged between 8 and 24 years through the brand's dynamic Solera System at its aging facility situated more than 2,300 meters above sea level in Guatemala. The Solera progression moves through casks previously holding American whiskeys, Sherry wines, and Pedro Ximénez wines before the final blend enters American white oak barrels specially charred with Guatemalan cacao and Cobán chili peels. That additional maturation imparts roasted cacao and aromatic spice notes; the blend is subsequently rested for several months in oak vats before bottling.
"For the 50th Anniversary Edition, I drew inspiration from ancient ceremonial celebrations in what is now Guatemala, where beverages made with cacao and chili were traditionally enjoyed," said Vásquez. "We wanted to honor that heritage while exploring a new expression of Zacapa through maturation."
The tasting profile opens with vanilla and caramelized fruit on the nose, transitions to wood, toffee, and aromatic spice on the palate, and finishes with warm, lingering toasted notes — a sensory build well suited to the ultra-premium spirits shelf.
Route-to-Market & On-Premise Push
Distribution is intentionally narrow for launch. Zacapa is concentrating initial availability across four high-volume, high-influence markets — New York, California, Texas, and Florida — where Diageo's wholesaler network has the deepest penetration in the ultra-premium spirits segment. The selective rollout is a textbook limited-edition strategy: concentrate depletions in markets where velocity data can be captured quickly and bar-program placement drives consumer trial before any broader expansion.
On-premise activation is a core pillar. Vásquez is conducting a series of intimate tastings at key U.S. accounts, and the brand has developed a signature serve — the GuateMai Tai, combining the Anniversary Edition with orange liqueur, orgeat, fresh lime juice, and aromatic bitters — positioned to drive trial at select accounts and give bartenders a ready-made pour to feature on seasonal menus.
The bottle ships in a commemorative canister featuring Zacapa's signature handwoven petate band reimagined in an anniversary colorway, giving retail buyers a strong end-cap and gifting story heading into the Q4 holiday selling window — historically the highest-velocity period for super-premium and ultra-premium rum SKUs.
What It Means for the Ultra-Premium Rum Shelf
Zacapa's move arrives as the ultra-premium rum category continues to capture shelf space and consumer wallet share that once belonged almost exclusively to aged Scotch and single malt whiskey. Rum's provenance narrative — origin distillery, elevation aging, Solera systems — is increasingly resonating with spirits buyers and sommeliers trained to articulate terroir and process. A limited-edition expression with a documented, differentiated finishing process gives wholesaler sales reps a concrete story to bring to both on-premise buyers and fine spirits retailers.
For Diageo, the release also reinforces Zacapa's positioning within its broader spirits portfolio strategy, where heritage brands with geographic specificity and master-blender credibility command margin premiums that offset volume softness elsewhere. Distributors carrying the core Zacapa No. 23 and Edición Negra lineup have a natural cross-sell opportunity — and a compelling reason to negotiate Anniversary Edition placement alongside existing Zacapa facings.
The broader rum distribution landscape is watching closely: premium aged rum is one of the few spirits sub-segments posting consistent depletion growth in the U.S. three-tier system, and a Diageo-backed limited SKU at a $49.99 price point tests whether the category can sustain accessible ultra-premium price bands without cannibalizing core expressions.
