The Retail Footprint
Wandering Bear Coffee secured a full-chain planogram placement at Target in August, rolling four 8oz RTD cans into the retailer's nationwide cold coffee set — one of the more significant off-premise wins for an independent cold brew brand this year. The SKU slate covers Organic Original Black, Double Latte, Vanilla Latte, and Mocha Latte, each retailing at $3.99. The move follows a June soft launch of three 32oz multi-serve cartons — Organic Original Black, Espresso Roast, and Double Latte — into roughly 300 Target locations concentrated in the Midwest and Northeast, where those units are priced at $9.99 and merchandised in the refrigerated set.
The staggered format strategy is deliberate. Placing the single-serve cans chainwide positions Wandering Bear in Target's high-velocity RTD coffee gondola, while the multi-serve cartons build basket value in the dairy-adjacent cold case — two distinct planogram positions, two shopper missions, and a broader cold-chain footprint within a single retail partner.
A Crowded 2026 Calendar
Target is only the latest door to open in what has been an aggressive retail buildout for the New York-based brand. Wandering Bear added SKUs across Kroger's Fred Meyer division in April, followed by launches into Albertsons' Pavilions banner in March and Jewel-Osco in August. A nationwide rollout at Sprouts Farmers Market landed in July, complemented by seasonal rotations across four major Costco regions — a warehouse club format that demands high turn rates and tight supply-chain execution. Taken together, the 2026 activity represents a materially wider off-premise distribution footprint, moving the brand well beyond its original direct-to-consumer and foodservice roots.
That DTC and office-delivery heritage — Wandering Bear was among the earliest brands to move cold brew into bulk bag-in-box formats for workplace accounts — gives the company cold-chain and logistics muscle that translates to consistent on-shelf freshness, a critical factor as mass and natural-channel retailers sharpen quality standards for refrigerated coffee. The brand's latte SKUs differentiate further on a nutrition platform: 11 grams of protein per can via ultra-filtered milk protein concentrate, and a claimed 50% less sugar than the category's leading canned latte competitors.
What It Means for the Category
Target's publicized "food-forward" strategy — adding thousands of food and beverage items in 2026 with emphasis on protein, wellness, and trend-driven flavors — is reshaping which suppliers get shelf access and how much space they receive. For RTD coffee, that creates an opening for brands that can deliver both a premium sensory story and a functional nutrition angle, two attributes Wandering Bear has built its positioning around since its 2014 founding by Matt Bachmann and Ben Gordon.
"There's such exciting momentum behind Target's merchandising strategy right now," said Ben Gordon, President and co-founder, "and we are beyond thrilled to play a role in that by bringing accessible wellness to the Target guest with super premium cold brew and better-for-you lattes."
For competing RTD coffee suppliers and their wholesale partners, the placement signals that Target is actively curating the cold coffee set around protein-forward, better-for-you credentials — a trend that has already reshaped the non-alcoholic beverage and ready-to-drink segments more broadly. Brands without a clear wellness differentiator may face tighter planogram real estate as the retailer accelerates its grocery reinvestment. Wandering Bear's back-half 2026 velocity at Target will be a closely watched data point for the wider premium RTD coffee category.
