Texas Liquor Chain Turns Las Vegas into Key Sourcing Hub
Spec's Wines, Spirits & Finer Foods, the Houston-based retailer operating 220+ stores across Texas with $2 billion in annual revenue, has quietly made Las Vegas one of its most important buying destinations, according to industry sources.
The family-run chain—led by owner and president John Rydman, co-owner Lindy Rydman, and EVP Lisa Rydman-Lindsey—maintains more than 58,000 SKUs company-wide, with individual stores stocking 10,000 to 30,000 SKUs. To fill that pipeline, Spec's buyers travel regularly to Las Vegas, where they attend Nightclub & Bar Show floors, participate in private supplier tastings on the Strip, and evaluate products for eventual placement across Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, and beyond.
Sources say the chain uses Vegas as a proving ground for spirits, wines, and ready-to-drink products, with several recent shelf additions traced directly to Las Vegas sourcing trips. In an industry where retail shelf space is finite, early access to a Spec's buyer can determine whether a brand gains regional traction or becomes a breakout success.
Judging the Industry's Only Buyer-Led Competition
Spec's connection to Las Vegas extends beyond informal sourcing. The retailer has served as a judge at the PR%F Awards since the competition's inaugural year, sitting alongside decision-makers from Delta Sky Clubs, Southern Glazer's Wine & Spirits, Breakthru Beverage Group, Caesars Palace, Boyd Gaming, Hard Rock International, The Sugar Factory, and Young's Market Company.
Now in its eighth year, the PR%F Awards is the only major spirits, wine, and beverage competition where every judge is a working buyer or decision-maker. "Judges aren't paid; they fly to Las Vegas on their own time for two days of double-blind tasting and unmasked package review, looking for products they can actually place in their establishments."
Spec's evaluates new brands at the judging table using the same methodology as its internal buying process: 100-point scoring on appearance, aroma, mouthfeel, taste, and finish, followed by an unmasked review of branding, design, and marketability.
With five additional Texas locations planned for 2026, Spec's buying capacity continues to expand, making its participation in Vegas sourcing trips and the PR%F Awards increasingly significant for emerging producers.
Why It Matters
For emerging distillers, winemakers, and RTD brands, a medal at PR%F represents more than industry recognition—it's direct access to a buyer capable of placing product on thousands of shelves across the second-largest state in the U.S. Spec's presence at both Las Vegas trade events and the PR%F judging table reinforces how major retailers now source talent regionally while maintaining national scale.
