The California Milk Advisory Board (CMAB) has named 15 companies to its 8th annual Real California Milk Excelerator, the industry's most visible incubation program dedicated to value-added dairy, spanning ready-to-drink beverages, functional nutrition formats, and freezer-aisle novelty. Since 2021, Excelerator alumni have generated nearly $60 million in combined brand sales for the dairy category — a figure that underscores the program's growing commercial relevance for retailers, distributors, and dairy ingredient suppliers watching where growth-stage volume is heading.
The program, run in partnership with VentureFuel, now operates two distinct tracks: a Growth-Stage Excelerator cohort of eight companies and an earlier-stage Incubator cohort of seven. Each track offers mentorship, programming, and stipends. For beverage-side operators, the most strategically relevant growth-stage entrants are Yah Yah Yah — a premium RTD iced latte brand built around Middle Eastern coffee tradition, clean-label ingredients, real California milk, real honey, and 5 grams of prebiotic fiber — and the Hartman Strawberry/Acai Protein Drink, a high-protein drinkable yogurt engineered in a freeze/thaw format with extended shelf life. Both SKUs target the fast-growing functional dairy segment that Innova Market Insights identifies as being driven by protein, gut health, and occasion-driven convenience.
The Stakes and Structure
The program culminates in December at a pitch event in San Luis Obispo, Calif., where all eight Excelerator brands will present to a live judging panel. Four finalists will each receive $30,000 in marketing support and be tracked over 12 months for in-market performance — depletions, velocity, and retail distribution gains — competing for a $100,000 grand prize to be awarded in 2027. The same event will reveal the $100,000 winner from the 2025 cohort, giving the occasion dual commercial weight for any retailer or category buyer attending.
"After eight years, we're doubling down on commercialization, helping companies using the Real California Milk seal to scale their businesses, strengthen their path to market and navigate an increasingly challenging CPG environment," said Bob Carroll, Chief Executive Officer of the CMAB. Fred Schonenberg, Founder and CEO of VentureFuel, framed the program's 2026 mandate around shelf placement and sustainable demand creation, describing the Excelerator as a "Commercialization Engine for Value-Added Dairy Innovation."
Route-to-Market Implications
For distributors and buyers tracking emerging dairy brands, the 2026 cohort reflects several channel-relevant trends. The beverage formats — RTD lattes, drinkable yogurt, protein chai — require cold-chain infrastructure and position squarely against the functional beverage set in the refrigerated off-premise aisle. Brands like Secret Creamery, with its AAPI-influenced probiotic ice cream, and Tulsi Foods, moving clean-label paneer from ethnic-aisle placement into the mainstream dairy case, signal where multicultural retail distribution strategy is heading at the regional grocery level. The Incubator track's seven brands — including a ready-to-drink protein chai (Kadak) and a RTD latte targeting healthcare workers (Monava) — represent earlier bets on formats that could scale into distributor portfolios within 18 to 24 months.

The Food & Beverage Magazine network has tracked the Excelerator program as a leading indicator of which dairy formats attract regional chain interest within two years of program graduation.
