North Coast Brewing Company is extending one of craft beer's most recognizable stout franchises into sessionable territory. The Fort Bragg, California-based Certified B Corp will ship Chill Rasputin — a 4.5% ABV stout inspired by its flagship Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout — to select retail accounts beginning in early October, packaged in 16-ounce four-packs.
The move reflects a deliberate SKU rationalization and brand-extension strategy that a growing number of craft suppliers are pursuing: leveraging equity built in a high-ABV halo product to capture incremental volume in the session and everyday-drinking segment, where off-premise velocity and cold-chain shelf turns are far more consistent than with specialty or limited-release formats.
The Brand Calculus
Old Rasputin has carried North Coast's on-premise and off-premise presence since the brewery's 1988 founding, accumulating a loyal following that skews toward seasoned craft drinkers. Chill Rasputin is engineered to widen that funnel. The beer retains the dark chocolate and roasted coffee flavor architecture of its predecessor but drops the body and alcohol load, positioning it for higher-frequency purchase occasions — a critical driver of depletion velocity at the wholesale tier.
"Old Rasputin has developed an incredibly loyal following over the years," said Jennifer Owen, CEO of North Coast Brewing Company. "With Chill Rasputin, we created a beer that honors that legacy while offering a lighter, more approachable option for a wider range of occasions. It's still unmistakably Rasputin, just a little more relaxed."
For distributors, a sessionable stout at 4.5% ABV opens planogram conversations in sections where a 9% imperial stout rarely competes — standard craft sets, seasonal displays, and multi-pack end-caps where turn rates and price-per-ounce drive placement decisions more than prestige positioning.
Packaging and Sustainability
The four-pack format uses Eco-Rings, a 100% compostable alternative to traditional plastic can holders, consistent with North Coast's B Corp certification commitments. From a supply-chain standpoint, compostable secondary packaging is an increasingly visible differentiator in retailer sustainability scorecards, particularly among natural and specialty grocery chains that evaluate supplier compliance alongside depletions data.
The 16-ounce can format also aligns with established craft beer merchandising norms in the off-premise channel, where the 16-oz four-pack has become a dominant SKU architecture for craft brands seeking premium price-per-ounce positioning against 12-oz six-pack competition.
Route-to-Market Outlook
North Coast has not disclosed the wholesale footprint for the Chill Rasputin launch, and the brewery's distribution network — concentrated in California and select national accounts — will determine how quickly the SKU achieves meaningful depletion volume. Retail availability will be supported by the beer locator at northcoastbrewing.com, with the brewery's Pub and Brew Shop in Fort Bragg serving as a direct point of consumer trial.
For the broader craft beer supply chain, the Chill Rasputin launch is a case study in brand architecture strategy: using an established, high-equity name to reduce the sales-floor education burden on distributor reps and retail buyers while targeting a consumption occasion — casual outdoor and live-event settings — that drives repeat off-premise purchase. Whether the extension cannibalizes Old Rasputin shelf space or genuinely grows the brand's total footprint will be the key metric to watch through the brewery's first full quarter of shipments.
