Caribbean Spirits Brand Eyes Indian Premium Segment Monika Alcobev, a Mumbai-based spirits importer and distributor, has entered a partnership with Angostura to bring the Caribbean producer's rum and bitters portfolio to India. The distributor will handle import, distribution, and marketing across key Indian markets, starting with Maharashtra and Delhi before expanding into additional states. The initial portfolio includes Angostura 5-Year-Old Rum, Angostura Aromatic Bitters, and Angostura Orange Bitters. The products will be positioned across bars, restaurants, retail outlets, and hospitality venues.

Capturing Craft Cocktail Growth The partnership arrives as India's premium spirits segment sees rising demand for craft cocktails and authenticated global labels. Angostura, founded in 1824, holds significant credibility among bartenders and mixologists globally, with its aromatic bitters maintaining cult status in bartending circles. "Angostura carries a rare combination of heritage, credibility, and enduring relevance within the international spirits community," said Kunal Patel, Managing Director of Monika Alcobev. He noted that Indian consumers are "displaying far greater curiosity towards authentic brands with provenance, craftsmanship, and a strong association with evolving cocktail culture, with drinks such as the Picante and other globally influenced cocktails increasingly shaping urban consumption trends." Angostura's Chief Executive Officer, Ian Forbes, framed the deal as more than distribution expansion. "This partnership represents more than expanding our global distribution. It is about positioning Angostura as a premium lifestyle brand in India. We see significant opportunities to work closely with bartenders, mixologists, retailers and hospitality partners to showcase the versatility and quality that have made Angostura respected around the world."

From Grey Market to Official Channel Angostura has maintained a presence in India's bar ecosystem for decades, primarily through unofficial channels. The official partnership with Monika Alcobev marks a shift toward formalized distribution. Monika Alcobev represents over 100 international spirits brands across India and South Asia, including Jose Cuervo, Remy Martin, Cointreau, Ron Diplomático, and others. The company completed an SME IPO in July 2025.

Why It Matters

For hospitality operators and retailers, this signals a consolidation in how premium spirits brands are entering the Indian market. Operators in Maharashtra and Delhi can expect improved availability and pricing consistency for Angostura products as the brand transitions from grey-market to official distribution—a model increasingly favored by multinational spirits houses seeking to build structured retail and on-premise presence in South Asia.
