Malört Plans August World Record Attempt for Charitable Cause
Jeppson's Malört is staging an unconventional fundraiser on August 30, attempting to break the world record for the largest mass of people taking a shot of the polarizing spirit at the same time.
The event, titled "Malört World Record: Bad Decision for a Good Cause," will take place at Recess, 838 W. Kinzie St., from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., with the official record attempt scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The $10 tickets include one shot and a donation match: CH Distillery, which owns and produces Malört, will contribute $10 to Ravenswood Community Services for each ticket sold.
Fundraising Structure
Ravenswood Community Services, a Chicago nonprofit providing food, housing, and support services to people experiencing hunger and homelessness, is the beneficiary. Ticket upgrades including shot glasses and commemorative t-shirts are available, though space is limited.
Non-drinkers may purchase spectator tickets. The event is restricted to those 21 and older.
"Malört brings people together for the shared experience of a questionable choice," said Tremaine Atkinson, CEO of CH Distillery. "This event is the perfect way to gather and give back to a great cause while we're at it. We're going to attempt something patently ridiculous and do some serious good for Chicago in the process."
The Spirit's Chicago Roots
Malört, named after Swedish immigrant Carl Jeppson who first distilled it in the 1920s during Prohibition, has become a cultural touchstone in Chicago—described by the brand as both revered and reviled for its distinctive bitter profile. CH Distillery has donated more than $500,000 in cash, goods, and services to charitable causes in Chicago and beyond since its founding.
The record attempt is being co-organized with Everleigh Entertainment. Additional programming, a host, live entertainment, giveaways, and food specials are planned, though details remain unannounced.
"Chicago knows how to throw a party with personality, and nothing says personality quite like Malört," said Franky Everleigh of Everleigh Entertainment. "This is going to be one of the most unforgettable moments of the year."
Tickets are available at www.malortworldrecord.com.
Why It Matters
For Chicago's hospitality and spirits industry, this event represents a high-profile experiential marketing play—leveraging Malört's cult status as both a rite of passage and conversation starter while supporting a local cause. The matching donation model normalizes hospitality giving and could serve as a template for other brands seeking to combine brand activation with community impact.
