Cork's Market Dominance Extends Across Price Tiers Natural cork closures continue to command the U.S. wine market, according to NielsenIQ data analyzed by the Portuguese Cork Association (APCOR) and the Natural Cork Council for the 52-week period ending July 2026. Cork-sealed wines generated 62.3% of all domestic off-premise wine sales, valued at $7.74 billion, while capturing 56.32% of total case volume (56.32 million cases) in the $12.42 billion U.S. market. In traditional 750ml glass bottle formats priced $8.00 and above, cork closures commanded 73.8% of bottle sales revenue and 70.8% of case volumes.

Significant Price Premium Over Alternatives Cork-sealed wines averaged $137.37 per case across all price tiers, compared to $107.92 per case for screwcaps and $44.63 per case for alternative closures. Within the premium category ($8.00+), cork bottles reached $147.88 per case. The closure captured 95% of total domestic revenue in the Luxury tier ($25.00+) and 54% in Ultra Premium wines ($15.00–$24.99). Among the Top 100 U.S. wine brands, cork secured 97% of Luxury tier revenue during the 52-week period.

Mainstream Brands Embrace Cork for Growth Cork's market success extends beyond special-occasion bottles.

Among the Top 100 U.S. wine brands, 100% cork-sealed 750ml glass bottles accounted for 8 of the top 10 revenue-growth SKUs and 9 of the top 10 volume-growth SKUs, indicating that leading wineries view cork as a tool for accessible premiumization.

White Wine Category Expansion Cork's presence in white wine continues to grow, despite dominance in red wine.

In the Top 100 brands segment, cork-sealed wines represented 49% of active white wine SKUs and generated 44% of total white wine revenue ($3.15 billion). In the $8.00+ price tier, white wine maintained 75% cork SKU presence. Chardonnay remains the benchmark variety for cork, driving over half of all U.S. white wine sales ($1.60 billion) and capturing 59.9% revenue share ($961 million) in the category. Sauvignon Blanc proved particularly receptive to cork closures, with cork-sealed bottles indexing at a 34.5% higher average case realization ($130.51/case) compared with other white wine category averages. Cork-sealed Sauvignon Blanc commanded a 14.3% price premium over screwcaps ($144.17 vs. $126.13/case).

Resilience During Market Downturn Amid macroeconomic headwinds in the U.S. wine industry, cork-sealed wines demonstrated superior stability. While non-glass and synthetic alternative closures suffered a steep -28% year-over-year revenue contraction in the Popular Premium tier ($8.00–$11.99), upper-tier cork sales remained resilient, dropping just -2% year-over-year in the Luxury segment. These U.S. findings align with European benchmarks. In the UK, cork-sealed wines commanded an 18.2% retail price premium and a 74.5% premium in on-premise dining. In France, cork sealed 86% of top 120 AOP and IGP still wines between €8 and €20, capturing 86% of total sales value and commanding 15% to 26% average price premiums over screwcaps. Patrick Spencer, Executive Director of the Natural Cork Council, stated: "Natural cork isn't just for special occasion bottles. It is the leading revenue driver for the entire U.S. wine market. Capturing over 62% of domestic off-premise dollar sales and driving 8 out of the top 10 revenue-growth wines in the country, cork provides everyday shoppers with an immediate signal of quality and sustainability."

Why It Matters

For wine retailers and on-premise operators, the data signals that cork positioning remains central to consumer perception of quality and value—particularly as mainstream brands pursue premiumization strategies. The resilience of cork-sealed wine sales during industry downturns suggests consumer trust in the closure transcends price sensitivity, making it a reliable anchor for margin defense.
