Italian Winery Launches Collectible Single-Vineyard Expression Castello di Bolgheri, the oldest winery in Tuscany's Bolgheri region, has released Barinca Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2021, a pure Cabernet Franc that marks the estate's first bottling of the varietal as a standalone wine. The 2021 vintage is limited to 2,500 bottles and approximately 150 magnums. The vineyard sits on limestone- and gravel-rich soils between Tenuta San Guido and Ornellaia, where coastal influences and sea breezes moderate ripening. According to the release, "The 2021 vintage is defined by a remarkable concentration balanced by freshness and harmony. A hot, dry summer was tempered by cooling sea breezes, encouraging slightly earlier ripening, while low yields and particularly thick grape skins contributed to the wine's depth and concentration." Barinca will be produced only in exceptional vintages, positioning it as a collectible release. The wine is aged for cellaring potential of ten or more years and carries a suggested retail price of $399.99. It will be available in select U.S. markets beginning in October 2026.
Why It Matters
The release represents a strategic shift for the estate—Bolgheri is known primarily for Bordeaux-style red blends, not single-varietal Cabernet Francs. A high-priced, limited-production wine targets collectors and fine-dining sommeliers seeking differentiation in the premium Italian wine category.
