Islay Distillery Brings High-PPM Experimentals to U.S.
Market Bruichladdich Distillery's Octomore Series 17 is now available across the United States through its e-boutique and select whisky retailers. Three expressions—17.1, 17.2, and 17.3—launched September 1, with Octomore 17.4 arriving October 1 in limited quantities, marking the first U.S. release of the historically exclusive ".4" expression. Octomore's foundation is paradoxical: despite extreme peat levels measured in parts per million (PPM), the distillery's tall, narrow-necked stills produce whiskies described as balanced and elegant. Each annual series explores barley provenance, peat levels, and cask maturation through four distinct, unrepeatable expressions. "Octomore embodies Bruichladdich Distillery's purpose: to create thought-provoking whiskies that challenge industry norms and offer consumers something they cannot get anywhere else," says Master Blender Adam Hannett.
The Four Releases Octomore 17.1 ($204.99) serves as the reference point.
Distilled from 100% Scottish mainland Concerto barley malted to 81 PPM, it matured entirely in first-fill bourbon barrels, delivering notes of salt, smoke, and sweetness. Octomore 17.2 ($244.99) uses the same barley and peat level as 17.1 but follows an unconventional maturation path: four years in second-fill French oak casks previously holding bourbon, then finished in first-fill Port wine casks. This cask combination marks the first time Octomore has pursued it, yielding pepper, citrus, and berry notes. Octomore 17.3 ($279.99) emphasizes terroir. Single-farm, single-field, and single-vintage barley from Irene's Field on Octomore Farm—two miles from the distillery—was malted to 132.1 PPM. After five years in first-fill bourbon barrels, it was finished in second-fill Ribera del Duero, Sauternes, Eiswein, and Syrah casks. "You don't get a whisky with greater provenance than this. We know the farmer, we know the field where the barley was grown, and we know this will intrigue whisky drinkers with its peating level of 132.1 PPM," Hannett says. "For me, this is an elemental and expressive whisky, powerful yet composed, weather-beaten, coastal and deeply satisfying." Octomore 17.4 ($249.99), arriving October 1, completes the series. Malted to 108.2 PPM, it matured in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks and finished in French virgin oak, offering peat smoke, maritime character, and dried fruit notes.

The inclusion of the historically distillery-exclusive 17.4 signals Bruichladdich's confidence in its American market and its willingness to break from release patterns to test consumer appetite for high-PPM peated Scotch.
