PE Firm Bets on Performance Hydration Category Axum Capital Partners, a Charlotte-based private equity firm, has agreed to acquire a controlling interest in BARCODE, a performance hydration brand, in partnership with NBA All-Star Victor Wembanyama. The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026. Wembanyama will continue as a shareholder and strategic partner. "I'm incredibly excited to partner with Axum and look forward to working closely with the team as we execute BARCODE's next chapter of growth," Wembanyama said. "I believe we have a great opportunity to establish a leading transformative hydration platform across the wellness space."
Building on an Athlete-Backed Brand BARCODE was co-founded by NBA champion Kyle Kuzma and has attracted endorsements from celebrities and athletes including Halle Berry, Kelly Rowland, Derrick Rose, Chelsea Gray, and Carmelo Anthony. The brand positions itself as a functional alternative to conventional sports drinks. BARCODE Performance Water is plant-based and contains vitamins D, B6, and B12, magnesium, ashwagandha, and no added sugar.
Wellness Market Backdrop Muhsin Muhammad, a Managing Partner at Axum, said the acquisition advances the firm's strategy of backing health and wellness consumer brands alongside distinctive founders and athletes. "With the global health and wellness food and beverage market expected to exceed $2 trillion by 2033, Axum is reinforcing its commitment to backing category-defining health and wellness brands," Muhammad said. DLA Piper is serving as legal counsel to Axum.
